Scene Cleanup Standard
IICRC
Releases
New Crime
LAS VEGAS,NV—
The Institute of Inspec-
tion, Cleaning and Restoration Certifica-
tion
(IICRC) has published a new standard
of care for the cleaning and decontamination
associated with trauma and crime scenes.
The new ANSI/IICRC S540 Standard
for Trauma and Crime Scene Cleanup is
approved by the
American National Stan-
dards Institute
(ANSI) and defines the cri-
teria and methodology behind its findings
for the inspection and cleaning of blood
and other potentially infectious material
contamination.
The S540 Standard describes the proce-
dures to be followed (after all scenes have
been released by law enforcement or regu-
latory agencies) and the precautions to be
taken when performing trauma and crime
scene cleanup regardless of surface, item
or location.
“Many great minds in the fields of inspec-
tion, cleaning, restoration and infection
control came together to collaborate on the
S540,” said
Pete Duncanson,
chairman
of the IICRC. “Trauma and crime scene
cleanup is a comprehensive job that if not
done correctly, can impact the safety and
well-being of future occupants if not com-
pletely remediated. Every company doing
this type of remediation should consider
obtaining a copy of the S540 Standard as a
comprehensive resource for their company
and their crews.”
Procedures for the following components
of trauma and crime scene cleanup are in-
cluded in the new standard: principles of
trauma and crime scene cleanup; safety and
health; biocide and antimicrobial technolo-
gy; administrative procedures, documenta-
tion and risk management; inspection and
preliminary determination equipment and
tools; limitations, complexities, complica-
tions and conflicts; structural remediation;
vehicle and machinery construction; con-
tents remediation; containment and dis-
posal of waste or sharps; and confirmation
of cleanliness.
When selecting or recommending a trau-
ma and crime scene cleanup company in
the area, be sure they are up to date in the
latest industry standards and certifications
to ensure the proper cleaning and remedia-
tion of blood and other potentially infec-
tious material contamination. As an inter-
national nonprofit that offers certifications
in the inspection, cleaning and restoration
industry, the IICRC has been gathering
technical information, suggesting proce-
dures and setting ethical standards for the
cleaning and restoration industry for more
than 40 years.
IICRC certified firms have been thor-
oughly vetted, and must meet specific re-
quirements including yearly continued
education, proof of insurance and must
employ technicians who are up-to-date on
their certifications.

cializes in trauma and crime scene cleanup

ed Standards Developing Organization

ing and restoration industries. Representing
