Matthew J. (M.J.) FitzPatrick

opened

for business at his private residence in Philadelphia in 1904

most funerals were still conducted in the private homes of the

deceased. He eventually moved the business to North Broad

Street at Rising Sun Avenue. M.J. was joined in business by his

son,

Over 150 Years of Innovation at Ruland Funeral

Home

PATCHOGUE,NY—

In

1856,

JohnR. Smith

found-

ed what would eventually

become the

Ruland Funeral

Home.

Mr. Smith worked from his home and provided un-

dertaking services to families in the greater Patchogue area.

In the late 1860’s Smith teamed up with

Charles Wallace

Ruland

and formed

Smith &Ruland Undertakers.

Due to

declining healthMr. Smith retired in the late 1880’s. No lon-

ger able to work from the Smith residence, Mr. Ruland pur-

chased the former Patchogue Laundry building which be-

came home to

C. W. Ruland Funeral Services.

In 1895, C. W. Ruland gained notoriety for his selfless work

in caring for the sailors of the Louis V. Place. The small schoo-

ner carrying a cargo of coal from Baltimore to New York be-

came stranded on a sand bar on Fire Island. Six crewmembers

perished during the rescue efforts, two were rescued, only one
