CHAMPAIGN,IL—
On Tuesday, De-
cember 2, 2014, central Illinois com-
munities said thank you to local Honor
Guard volunteers in a big way.
Sunset
Funeral Homes
partnered with their
local television station,
WCIA News
Channel 3
, to host the Operation Hon-
or Guard Day of Giving. Donation sites
were set up in Champaign and Dan-
ville, IL. For more than twelve hours,
volunteers stood outside in the cold,
collecting generous donations from the
communities. Donations at both sites
and online totaled nearly
$30,000 for the day.
Sunset Funeral Home
also hosted their first an-
nual 5K in Sunset Me-
morial Park in October
to kick start Operation
Honor Guard’s fundrais-
ing efforts. Veterans and
active military were invit-
ed to participate for free.
This event raised $2,100
through local businesses
and participant entries.
The goal of Operation
Honor Guard is to not
only raise money to help
support honor guard
units at each American
Legion Post, but also to
raise awareness about
the importance of the
services these groups
perform. Many don’t re-
