He was born in Naperville, Illinois on June 9, 1933 to Edwin and Judith (McClellan) Braun. He was a retired CPA, and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Karl graduated from Illinois State University in 1956, and married Anna Moss in 1957. For many years he worked at Lakeshore Financial in Milwaukee as an accountant and financial advisor before retiring to the town of Fish Creek in 1999. He enjoyed biking and gardening, and spending quiet weekends at home with his children and grandchildren. Farmer will join the association’s staff as its new general counsel. He will assume his duties on January 1, 2022, follow- ing the retirement of T. Scott Gilligan on De- cember 31, 2021. “After an extensive search, I am proud to welcome Chris Farm- er to the NFDA staff,” said NFDA CEO Chris- tine Pepper, MBA, CAE. “Chris has the ide- al combination of cor- porate experience and broad knowledge of the funeral service profes- sion and industry. I have no doubt he will provide sound legal advice and guidance to the association. He will also be a tremendous value and resource for our members, offering le- gal advice and much more.” In his role as general counsel, Farm- er will continue to offer complimen- tary legal advice to members – one of NFDA’s valued member benefits. He will also continue to maintain NFDA’s extensive library of legal forms, pres- ent educational programs on behalf of the association, manage NFDA’s GPL review service, work with the NFDA Professional Conduct Committee and much more. Farmer officially joined the NFDA staff on October 15 and began work with Gilligan to ensure a smooth transition. Farmer comes to NFDA after establish- ing his own legal practice, The Farmer Firm, which is dedicated to supporting funeral, cre- matory, and cemetery ser- vice providers and suppli- ers in corporate matters, mergers and acquisitions, commercial litigation, em- ployment, consumer liti- gation, banking, state and federal regulatory matters, and more. Farmer’s wide-ranging experience in the funeral service profession includes roles such as financial and business management con- sultant for The Foresight Companies; director of corporate development for Carriage Services; general counsel for the C remation Association of North Amer- ica and the Texas Funeral Directors Associ- ation; and corporate counsel for Service Corporation International. Farmer has presented extensively at fu- neral service education events and writ- ten numerous articles for trade pub- lications. He graduated from Purdue University with his bachelor’s degree in Psychology and his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center. Continued on page A26
