Urbine, who has funeral homes in Jer- sey Shore and Loganton, PA received the same award when he graduated PIMS and he will be providing the embalm- ing kit for all future recipients of The William J. Musman- no Memorial Award. The Pierce Chemical/Royal Bond Award was presented to Emily Anderson in recognition of her out- standing ability, commitment, attitude and achievement in the areas of restorative art and cosmetology. Michael Ku- ruc, representative from the Pierce Chemical Company and PIMS alumnus, made this award available. Emily received a plaque from The Pierce Chemical Company. The Dodge Award was presented to Christian Kreamer in recognize of her demonstration in both exceptional and theoretical exper- tise throughout the embalming curricula practicum. Matt Black, Dodge representative and PIMS alumnus, made this award available. Christian also received a complete Dodge Embalming Kit. The Champion Award for Mortuary Science Excellence is a criteria-based award of merit. This award was presented to Jordan Williams who demonstrated the quali- ties of scholarship, aptitude, and practical skills specifical- ly in the core science component of PIMS program. Paul Bauman, vice-president and general manager of Champion Company was on hand to present Williams with a plaque and credit towards Champion products. The Eugene C. Ogrodnik Entrepreneurial Award is a criteria-based award of merit. This award is presented to James Norris who demon- strated the qualities of stewardship, scholarship, and leader- ship. These qualities are indicated of the man who bears the namesake of the award; through his passion for education, visionary prowess, and keen business acumen, he established the legacy of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science while shaping the future of the funeral profession. In honor of his namesake, this award is presented to the student who, as recognized by the core business faculty of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, is deemed to have the entre- preneurial spirit and greatest potential to impact the funeral service industry at large. Ogrodnik and his wife Karen gra- ciously matched the award. The Core–A Pledge for Life Scholarship was presented to Autumn Deasey. Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) established this award to a student enrolled in PIMS campus program who can demonstrate that he/she will make an impact in the field of organ, tissue, and cor- nea recovery. The CORE award is funded through CORE’s partnership strategies committee by delegating funds in memory or in honor of an organ, tissue, or cornea donor, or a transplant recipient. T. J. Roser, PIMS alumnus and CORE’s liaison between funeral directors and medical ex- aminers/coroners was on hand to present the award. Ten percent of the graduates received the Mu Sigma Alpha Award which is the honorary society established by the National Association of Colleges of Mortuary Sci- ence and gives recognition to those students who have displayed outstanding merit in scholarship and who have conducted themselves as good citizens of the schools they attended. The recipients of the Mu Sigma Alpha Award are: Jeffrey Carney, James Clea, Christopher Hesisey, Lori White-Sanders and Sandra Zampogna. At the conclusion of the ceremony, student senate vice president Jordan William gave his closing farewell re- marks. As well, classmate Joseph Carrier led the congre- gation in the traditional singing of America the Beautiful which concluded the commencement exercise. PIMS Celebrates 80th Anniversary PIMS held its 80 th anniversary gala on Saturday, Septem- ber 7. Founded in 1939, PIMS has been leading the pro- fession in funeral service education for 80 years. The anni- versary gala was held at the school from noon to 6:00 pm. Activities, along with the open house includ- ed an appearance by Arm and Velda from “Trundle Manor” with their “Mo- bile Office of Villainy” and showcasing some funerary and anatomical “oddities.” Magic Man TJ Hill, a deco- rated contestant on “Ameri- ca’s Got Talent” entertained guests throughout the day. There was face painting by PIMS staff member Annie Cerutti and a lucky draw raffle auction with proceeds benefiting PIMS Schol- arship fund. The gala was quite successful with alum- ni and friends attending. The highlight of the anni- versary gala was an appear- ance by Hollywood actor and director, Daniel Roe- buck, who is best-known roles in the movies The Fu- gitive, Matlock, The Late Shift, Lost as well as numer- ous Rob Zombie and Don Coscarelli films. Roebuck was presented with PIMS Honorary Diploma in Fu- neral Directing and Em- balming. He addressed the graduates with a powering message regarding their role as funeral directors. In Roe- buck’s recent film Getting Grace, he played the role of a funeral director. A screen- ing of the movie was shown during the gala. Following the movie, Roebuck held a question and answer session for guests and was present for autographs and photo opportunities throughout the event.
