By Elleanor Davis Starks, CFSP-CCA,
Founder and Executive Director of the 100 BWFS, Inc.
defined the embalming process by allowing the return of loved ones so
families could mourn and have a last look at those lost in battle. Our pro-
fession is demanding and respectful. The 21
st
Century licensed funeral
director and embalmer must pass national and sometimes state board
exams to serve the public. Mortuary training schools and educational
seminars have been developed. Around the nation training has taken
place at Clark’s, Welch School of Embalming, Dr. Renouard’s Training
School, Eckels, Landig, American Academy McAllister, New England In-
stitute, Pittsburgh Institute, Worsham College, Barnes School, Cincinnati
College of Mortuary Science, Kentucky School, and Atlanta College to
name a few. Some of these historical training grounds have been re-
placed with newer institutions, while others just closed down over the
years, but the training lives on in the lives of great funeral legends.
Our chosen profession is indeed a privileged calling. We, the women
of funeral service, have pledged to
“Serve the grieved, comfort the
bereaved and create a lasting memory picture of the deceased.”
The 100BWFS, founded in 1993, is proud to present 23 honorees for
2014 Distinguished and Phenomenal Texas Women of Funeral
Service
. They are the “Best of the Best” and have lead by example as
role models for the new generation of caregivers who have chosen fu-
neral service. Each of them has made a continued commitment to the
funeral industry to serve, teach and educate, along their journey. They
possess a caring and never ending work ethic; they network and build
stronger professional relationships; they
have a reverence and respect for the dead
and they have lifted the spirits of millions
of bereaved families and given them peace
of mind. Meet each of them over the next
twelve months and learn their journey
to one of the greatest professions in the
world. They are owners, managers, funeral
directors, embalmers, grief counselors, trail-
blazers and visionaries. We hope that you
have one of these fantastic funeral profes-
sionals on your funeral service team.

up at Mt. Horeb Missionary Baptist Church where she
was an announcement clerk, choir member and ush-
er board member. Barbara was appointed as one of the
youngest members of the
Church Trustee Board.
This experience proved in-
valuable to her as she sat
alongside church deacons
and elders, gaining valu-
able administrative and
leadership skills.
Barbara received her
Bachelor’s Degree from the
University of North Texas
at Arlington. During the
summer of 1983, Barba-
ra went to the

ber 1, 1985. They have three children,
Francesca

side her husband and son, while serving as the firm’s busi-

their staff, construction

Open houses were sched-

Chamber of Commerce,
