Eventually, he, his wife, his six chil- dren, his parents, and his sister all lived above the King Street funeral home. In 1952, Charles “Chip” Snyder, Jr. was born. He was Charles’ first-born son and the only child that went into the family business. Chip went to college and got a busi- ness degree in 1974 and then graduat- ed from Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1975. He began working with his father at the funeral home, which was doing 175 funerals per year at this point. In 1984, the Lancaster location was expanded. “Slowly, every year, we were growing,” says Chip. He says of his grandfather, he “was a great mentor, but he didn’t teach. He would have you watch and observe and follow his lead.” Charles was known to say, “This is a very hard business. No matter what happens, the basic thing you need to remember is that you’re here to help people.” Chip became the owner of the funeral home in 1988, which he expanded by purchasing the Richard Bair Funeral Home in Millersville, PA in 1989. The funeral home was only doing 16 funer- als a year. “It had been a vibrant funeral home at one time, but things were slip- ping,” says Chip. Today, the home does around 100 funerals per year and is con- tinuing to grow. In 1997, Chip found five acres of land in the desirable Manheim Township on which to build another funeral home to his own specifications. They broke ground in 1999, and the doors opened on February 1, 2000. Chip gave the Continued on Page A24
