ICCFA Certifies 130+ in Cremation at
Gupton-Jones College in Atlanta

DECATUR,GA—
More than 130 students and
funeral directors attended the
International
Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Associ-
ation’s
two cremation certification programs
held April 29 and 30 at
Gupton-Jones College
of Funeral Service
in Decatur. ICCFA’s exclu-
sive Cremation Arranger Certification pro-
gram was held on day one; its Crematory Op-
erator Certification training was held on day
two. This is the most well-attended event that
ICCFA has held at a Pierce College location.
The Crematory Operator Certification of-
fers an in-depth look at what cremation is, the
science behind it, the components and how to
properly operate and maintain a retort machine,
proper and constant tracking of remains, and an
update on applicable laws and how to limit your
liability. Attendeesmust pass a strict test to receive
their official certificate, receive further instruction
on questions they get incorrect, and receive a cre-
matory operator manual courtesy of
Cremato-
ry Manufacturing & Service, Inc
. It should be
noted that only the ICCFA and the
Cremation
Association of North America
(CANA) are explic-
itly included in the regulations of several U.S.
states as approved crematory
operator certification providers.
ICCFA is the only industry
organization providing a Cre-
mation Arranger Certification.
This training discusses the his-
tory, myths and facts about cre-
mation, the preferences and
desires of modern consum-
ers, pricing vs. value, market-
ing, limiting liability, ethics and
how to conduct an effective
cremation arrangement where
everyone walks away happy.
Both certification programs
are approved for continu-
ing education credit by the
Academy of Professional Fu-
neral Service Practice, are rea-
sonably priced and include
breakfast, lunch and an after-
noon refreshment break.
Patty Hutcheson
, presi-
dent of Gupton-Jones Col-
lege of Funeral Service, is very
pleased with the results of this
two-year partnership between
ICCFA and Pierce Colleges.
“Career development is a vital
piece of our program at Gup-
ton-Jones. Our educational op-
portunities were highlighted at
this ICCFA training event and
really resonated with our stu-
dents,” Hutcheson said. “The
two-day event brought the en-
tire campus together to explore
comprehensive aspects of cre-
mation to educate the soon-
to-be funeral directors. This is
training that they wouldn’t oth-
erwise have experienced had
they attended another mortu-
ary school.”
The two-year partnership en-
tails that ICCFA will only pro-
vide its two-day, two-certifica-
tioncourse formortuary college
students at Pierce Colleges-no
other mortuary schools, which
is a considerable advantage for
Pierce College students when
entering the job market.
“That’s our aim: trying to pro-
vide tomorrow’s leaders with a
well-rounded knowledge of
cremation” said Poul Lemas-
ters, ICCFA cremation pro-
grams coordinator. “For in-
stance, the ICCFA Arranger
program is the only program
designed for arrangers-directors, preneed and at-
need arrangers-that teaches everything they need
to know about cremation. Not only on the ar-
rangement side, but the operational, marketing,
pricing and liability sides of cremation as well. It
is a unique offering and provides real value.”
Other upcoming events include: September
10-11 at Dallas Institute of Funeral Service, Dal-
las, TX, as well as a joint two-day program with
CANA in November in Phoenix, AZ.
Registration for these programs, as well as ad-
vice and answers to cremation concerns, may be
found
