Matt Black, Dodge rep- resentative and PIMS alumnus, made this award available. Jalen also received a com- plete Dodge Embalm- ing Kit. The Champion Award for Mortuary Sci- ence Excellence is a crite- ria-based award of merit. This award was present- ed to Barbara Daughen- baugh who demonstrated the qualities of scholar- ship, aptitude, and prac- tical skills specifically in the core science compo- nent of PIMS program. Paul Bauman, vice-pres- ident and general man- ager of Champion Com- pany was on hand to present Daughenbaugh with a plaque and a cred- it towards Champion products. The Eugene C. Ogrodnik Entrepreneurial Award was also a crite- ria-based award of merit. This award is presented Jacob Beebe who dem- onstrated the qualities of stewardship, schol- arship, and leadership. These qualities are in- dicated of the man who bears the namesake of the award; through his passion for education, visionary prowess, and keen business acumen, he established the lega- cy of the Pittsburgh In- stitute of Mortuary Sci- ence while shaping the future of the funeral pro- fession. In honor of his namesake, this award is presented to the student who, as recognized by the core business faculty of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, is deemed to have the en- trepreneurial spirit and greatest potential to im- pact the funeral service industry at large. Ogrod- nik and his wife Karen graciously matched the award. The Core–A Pledge for Life Scholarship was presented to Autumn Deasey. Center for Or- gan Recovery and Educa- tion (CORE) established this award to a student enrolled in PIMS camps program who can dem- onstrate that he/she will make an impact in the field of organ, tissue, and cornea recovery. The CORE award is funded through CORE’s part- nership strategies com- mittee by delegating funds in memory or in honor of an organ, tis- sue, or cornea donor, or a transplant recipient. T. J. Roser, PIMS alumnus and CORE’s liaison be- tween funeral directors and medical examiners/ coroners was on hand to present the award. Ten percent of the grad- uates received the Mu Sig- ma Alpha Award which is the honorary society es- tablished by the Nation- al Association of Colleges of Mortuary Science and gives recognition to those students who have dis- played outstanding mer- it in scholarship and who have conducted them- selves as good citizens of the schools they attend- ed. The recipients of the Mu Sigma Alpha Award are: Jacob Beebe, Jessica Keller, Shelby Ogozaly and Tandria Phillips. At the conclusion of the ceremony, student senate president Jessi- ca Keller gave her clos- ing farewell remarks. As well, classmate Chandra Law led the congregation in the traditional singing of America the Beauti- ful which concluded the commencement exercise.
