Every year my Dad took my brother and
me to the NCAA

playoffs. He was crazy
about basketball. After he died, I thought
that part of my life had ended.
At the arrangement, a thoughtful Director

Honor Children’s Grief Awareness Day
to promote this very worthy
and often overlooked cause.
One out of twenty children
loses a parent or loved one be-
fore the age of 18. As a funer-
al director,
Marcella Boyd
Cox
, Chief Marketing Offi-
cer of the
E. F. Boyd & Son
Funeral Home
in Cleveland
has personally witnessed the
grief of many children. “Our
E. F. Boyd & Son family has
cared for families in mourn-
ing for four generations, and
we pride ourselves in know-
ing how to provide com-
fort. But we have found the
grief of children to be espe-
cially wrenching. When we
heard about Children’s Grief
Awareness Day, God put it
on the hearts of our family to
help spread the word about
the needs of grieving chil-
dren.”
Cox contacted her friend,
Jim Milano
of
Milano
Monuments
, the foremost
monument designer in the
Midwest, and they assem-
bled a powerful team of
end-of-life services provid-
ers that included,

al and Crematory Servic-

Andrej Lah
of
Catholic
Cemeteries Association of
the Diocese of Cleveland
,
Mark Tripodi
of
Corner-
stone of Hope
, and
Gordon
Bowen

. Mi-
lano commented, “Milano
Monuments was extremely
pleased to participate in this
event. As businesses we want
to enhance the quality of life
in our communities. Partic-
ipating in Children’s Grief
Awareness Day was a perfect
opportunity to raise aware-
ness.”
TheChildren’sGrief Aware-
ness Day hour-long program
was oriented toward honor-
ing children’s grief. High-
lights included the pre-
sentation of a “Wreath of
honor,” remarks by children
who have experienced loss,
a group prayer, and musical
selections by featured solo-
ist
Nicole Johnson
of E. F.
Boyd. The event concluded
with the children launching
100 royal blue balloons into
a sunny, November sky. Lo-
cal media covered the event,
which was attended by em-
ployees and supporters from
sponsoring and nearby orga-
nizations.
Mark Tripodi, Executive
Director of Cornerstone of
Hope was pleased to host
the program. “Cornerstone
of Hope cannot do enough
to increase awareness about
children’s grief. Supporting
Children’s Grief Awareness
Day fits squarely into our
mission of providing sup-
port, education, and hope
for the grieving.”
J. Mark Busch, of Busch
Funeral Home and Crema-
tory, observed, “Our group’s
approach to honoring Chil-
dren’s Grief Awareness Day
shows a joining of forces that
our industry and our com-
munities can expect to see
more of. Busch’s goals are
aligned with the other spon-
sors’ in bringing much-need-
ed attention to children’s
grief. When Marcella Boyd
Cox and Jim Milano con-
tacted us about participating
we were pleased to say ‘Yes.’
Being a part of this effort
was an excellent business and
community service opportu-
nity for us.”
The Catholic Cemeteries
Association of the Diocese of
Cleveland provided many re-
sources that made the event
successful, including signage,
angel icons for the child-
themed wreaths, and the
videography service. Andrej
Lah, President of Catholic
Cemeteries Association re-
marked, “We were happy to
support the event and con-
tribute to its success, for ad-
dressing children’s grief is a
