Both Hardy and Close offered them- selves completely to the community through their funeral home and were always available for any need. Hardy passed away in 1995 and Close died eleven years later in 2006. Current owner Ben Underwood purchased Hardy-Close in 2013 and decided to maintain the original fu- neral home name given the strong name recognition and stellar reputa- tion that Hardy-Close has in the Bul- litt County area. Shortly after the purchase, Under- wood invested in making some no- table renovations, including updat- ed furnishings, a new arrangement room, a fresh chapel with solid wood pews, and a new fleet of cars. Un- derwood even introduced a 10-cent Coke machine, which has been a nostalgic hit with visitors. Underwood knew from a young age that he wanted to work in the funer- al industry, ever since he witnessed the lowering of his grandfather’s casket into the ground as a child in 1943. A grad- uate from Murray State University as well as the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science, Underwood served the country in the American army prior to purchas- ing his first funeral home in 1977. SHEPHERDSVILLE,KY— Hardy-Close Funeral Home is a family-owned and oper- ated funeral home located south of Louisville, KY in the town of Shepherdsville. It was originally established as Har- dy Funeral Home in 1929 by Harold Hardy. Hardy be- came close friends with J.B. Close, and in 1981, they be- When Underwood entered the fu- neral home business in 1977, he did so by purchasing Schoppenhorst Bros Funeral Home. Schoppen- horst Bros Funeral Home was estab- lished in 1892 by Edward Schop- penhorst, when he decided to branch off on his own from Schop- penhorst Bros Laundry and Linen Service, a laundry business owned by him and his two brothers. The fu- neral home remained in the Schop- penhorst family until Underwood purchased it and renamed it Schop- penhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home.
