One hundred years after Congress ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave women the right to vote, the nearly forgotten grave of suffragette and businesswoman Millie Logan Holbrook re- ceived a headstone in honor of the work she did for advancing women’s equality. Niewoehner moved to Rugby in the early 1970s and became interested in Holbrook’s story. He even spoke with Holbrook a few times before her death in 1980. “I remem- ber her as a tiny lady,” he was quoted as say- ing of his encounters with Holbrook. Learning of Holbrook’s past work in women’s suffrage, Niewoehner began col- lecting stories about her life. She was mar- ried to an undertaker and widowed father of 12. She was the first woman to drive a car in Rugby. During the campaign for women’s suffrage she was known to drive the speakers to meetings, church suppers, picnics and other events. Most interesting was her quest to open the Rugby Steam Laundry. Niewoehner re- counted the folktale that prior to moving to Rugby she filled out the paperwork to open the Rugby Steam Laundry using her initials only. It’s said when she arrived to get her per- mit townsmen had a fit! What an accom- plishment for a woman at that time. “I’ve been looking at this for a long time,” Niewoehner said of Holbrook’s life. “This pioneer lady did not have a marker. August was the 100th anniversary of women’s suf- frage, and the passage of [the 19th Amend- ment], so I thought this was kind of time- ly. I went ahead and did it.” More than 40 years after Millie was bur- ied, Niewoehner purchased her tombstone as a way of honoring her life and work.
