The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the United States on January 20, 2020 and within a short period of time, our entire society felt its effect. We’ve changed. Rather than going to the mov- ies, heading to a bar, or dining out, we are cook- ing meals together, playing board games, and simply enjoying each other’s company. We work from home instead of the office. We don’t meet in the conference room; we’re meeting over vid- eo. When we go to the grocery store, we put on gloves and wear a mask. Cashiers stand behind plexiglass, and shelves are all but bare. Companies across the country are respond- ing in amazing ways. Restaurants are adjusting by offering discounts, take-out, and delivery. Many companies are offering a pay increase for essential employees, while some organizations are continuing to pay non-essential employees, even if at a percentage of their normal wages. Some industries are expanding and hiring, such as grocery shopping services, delivery services like Grubhub and Amazon, and remote meet- ing technology companies such as Zoom. Many companies are offering professional services or educational courses for free. Funeral homes, cemeteries, and other death- care professions are certainly affected by the CO- VID-19 pandemic. Many funerals are now held via video, due to social distancing and crowd re- striction orders. Some funeral homes are helping families plan memorial services for a later date. We’d like to know what you are doing to help families, communities, and essential employ- ees or any struggles you may be facing due to the pandemic. Send us your response so we can share interesting and unique efforts that are be- ing made during this unprecedented and fright- ening time. Fred Mayhew of Trinity Fellowship Church. Dan Madden , President of Stark Memorial and Rev. Mayhew’s nephew, wanted to be able to have a proper celebration for his uncle. “With the current social distanc- ing restrictions and trying to keep everyone safe, we needed to find ways to celebrate a life, even if it was from afar,” said Madden. People were asked to meet at the church to watch a livestream feed of the service on a smart device from their vehi- cles. At the conclusion of the service, the family was escorted outside and vehicles processed by to express their condolences from a distance. There were 100 vehicles in attendance.
