WILLIAM E. “BILL” BURDAN of Cedar Lake, IN died No- vember 10, 2018 at the age of 78. A licensed funeral di- rector, he founded Burdan Funeral Home in the late 70’s. A 1960 graduate of the Worsham College of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association. SHIRLEY RAE CONAWAY of Uniontown, PA died Novem- ber 2, 2018at the age of 81. She and her husband, John “Dick” Conaway founded Conaway Enterprises, a  dis- tributor of specialty vehicles, funeral coaches, limousines, ambulances, transit buses, and recreational vehicles, in Union- town, PA in 1969. GARYTON COLVARD ECHOLS, JR of LaPlata, MD died Octo- ber 26, 2018 at the age of 85. A third generation funeral director, he and his wife, Carol purchased the Arehart Funeral Home, now the Arehart-Echols Funer- al Home, now operated by his son David. He co-founded with his sons the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home and Crematory in Charlotte Hall. FRANCIS G. OZOG of John- stown, PA died October 25, 2019 at the age of 75. He served the Johnstown com- munity as owner and funer- al director of the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., in Cambria City. STEPHEN“STEVE” CHARLES TAYLOR SR of Metter, GA died October 24, 2018 at the age of 75. A licensed funer- al director, he worked along- side his father for many years at the Taylor Funeral Home. He graduated from the Cin- cinnati College of Mortuary Science. DONALD RAY VARNER of Macks Creek, MO died Oc- tober 21, 2018 at the age of 84. A licensed funeral direc- tor since 2000, he joined the staff of Hedges-Scott Funer- al Homes in 1999 and con- tinued to operated the Macks Creek location for many years. WILLIAM V. “BILL” HOCKER of Albuquerque, NM died Oc- tober 19, 2018 at the age of 85. A licensed funeral direc- tor, he joined his father, Tony Frkovich at Grants Mortu- ary, which his parents found- ed in 1947. He later acquired ownership of the firm and op- erated it alongside his wife, Kathy and sons Bill Jr., Rob- ert, Stephen and John, and friend James Martinez. Hocker wrote two papers, The Parental Loss of an Adult Child and Unsanctioned and Unrecognized Grief, along with numerous magazine ar- ticles. A graduate of the California College of Mortuary Science, Hocker was a member of the New Mexico Fu- neral Service Association, where he later served as presi- dent. Elected to the National Funeral Directors Associ- ation board of governors, he served as president from 1988-1989 and was also president of the International Funeral Directors Association from 2010-2012. JOHN F. GLINSKY JR of Throop, PA died August 3, 2018 at the age of 87. A li- censed funeral director for 66 years, he began working at the John F. Glinsky Fu- neral Home, which was es- tablished by his late father. A graduate of the Eckles School of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the Lackawanna County Funeral Directors As- sociation, Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. RICHARD DEAN “DICK” SCHWARTZ of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Parkersburg, IA died October 21, 2018 at the age of 78. A licensed funeral director, he served his appren- ticeship at the White Funer- al Home in Independence, IA and then worked for Parrott & Wood Funeral Home in Waterloo. In 1975, he and his wife, Linda purchased Red- mond-Schwattz Funeral Home in Aplington and Park- ersburg. He continued to own and operate the funeral home until his retirement in 2001. A graduate of the Mil- waukee Institute of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association. DONALD LAMAR “DON” DANIELS of Greenville, AL died November 5, 2018 at the age of 65. A licensed funeral direc- tor, he was the former owner of Dunklin and Daniels Funer- al Home. He began working at Mack Funeral Home in Rob- ertsdale in 1969 and later at the Dunklin’s Funeral Home in downtown Greenville. In 1992, Don and Carolyn Herndon purchased the company from the Dunklin family. Dunk- lin-Herndon Funeral Home was later sold to Prime Suc- cession and in 2004, Don and his son, Damon purchased the funeral home back from the company, making it a lo- cally-owned, family-run business once again. R. BROWN “BRAD” BROWN JR of Mifflintown, PA died Sep- tember 13, 2018 at the age of 90. He was a fourth genera- tion funeral director and for- mer owner of the Brown Fu- neral Home in Mifflintown. A 1946 graduate of the Cin- cinnati College of Embalming, he was a member of the Na- tional Funeral Directors Asso- ciation, Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association and the Juniata Valley Funeral Directors Association. ROSALIA “SALLY” WEMPE SMITH of St. Joseph, MO died October 22, 2018 at the age of 98. A licensed funeral director, she worked alongside her late husband, Garth H. Smith, in owning and operating funer- al homes in Seneca, Axtel and Marysville, KS as well as North Kansas City, MO. In 1956 they moved to St. Joseph and pur- chased the Heaton-Bowman Funeral Home and in 1962, they acquired H.O. Siden- faden to form what is currently known as, Heaton-Bow- man-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel. Sally served as chair- man of the board for the funeral home as well as president of St. Joseph Crematory Company, St. Joseph Memo- rials, Inc and McNeil Grave Marker Company.
