After having earlier moved to Richmond, a Michigan casket manufacturing company started by Bruce and Suzanne Elder changed its name in 1972 to honor Bruce’s parents Vance and Doris Elder. The unique hearse was designed by The Royal Household and Jaguar Land Rover, and built by British coachbuilder Wilcox Limousines. Queen Elizabeth II herself was consulted on the plans and approved the final model. It was purposefully designed to allow the public to have a clear view of her coffin, and that it did. In addition to the windows, it also features a raised platform for the coffin, with three internal spotlights. From my understanding, many British hearses offer a more open view of the casket area and therefore the casket itself. I like the idea of making the casket the focal point of the hearse. I will say that the American hearses are more beautiful, but they seem to make it a point of hiding the casket. I don’t know why this is, and if anyone can enlighten me as to the design, I certainly would appreciate it. I don’t know if the Queen’s hearse will make any impact on the design of American hearses, but I would like to think so.
