Many heroes from wars past are buried at the Lutheran Cemetery, including four nurses that served in both World Wars, six military veterans that gave their lives while in service of their country, and 286 other veterans from every war since the War of 1812. The cemetery is also the resting place of Ruth Siems, who is credited with the creation of Stove Top Stuffing. William P. Woods, founder of the Lions Club International and its first president also lies to rest there. Continued on page A27 The Lutheran Cemetery Rededicates Long Lost Plaque EVANSVILLE, IN— The Lutheran Cemetery held a walking tour of the cemetery on September 18th in honor of former mayor Benjamin Bosse, who was buried there 100 years ago. The program began with the rededication of a longlost Bosse family plaque. Benjamin Bosse (18741922) passed away suddenly at the age of 48, but his contributions to the city are well-known and long-lasting. The high school bears his name, as does a sports field, which has the distinction of being featured in the movie A League of Their Own starring Tom Hanks. Benjamin came to Evansville and worked as a delivery boy for Bosse Brothers Grocery Store and studied at Evansville Commercial College at night. He began his political career in 1905 when he organized the successful mayoral campaign for Mayor John W. Boehne. He himself served as mayor from 1914 until his death in 1922. He constantly searched out ways to improve Evansville, and many of his efforts are part of Evansville today. An active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he served as the cemetery’s secretary-treasurer from 1895 until his death, personally caring for its landscaping. Trinity Lutheran Church in Evansville was organized in 1841 as a German Lutheran congregation and was then known as the German Lutheran Church. In 1852 the congregation acquired the property for a cemetery, which predated the Civil War, the Statue of Liberty, and the Eiffel Tower. The original plot of the cemetery was about half of the 10 acres it covers today. In 1928, Trinity Lutheran Church transferred all the cemetery assets to the newly formed Lutheran Cemetery Association. In 1979, the cemetery opened to all Lutherans regardless of Synod affiliation.
