U Dr. Wolfelt Invited to Rushing-Estes-Knowles Funeral Home in Uvalde, Texas UVALDE,TX— In midSeptember, Uvalde’s Rushing-Estes-Knowles Funeral Home invited Dr. Alan Wolfelt to Uvalde to meet with the families who lost loved ones in the horrific massacre of children and teachers at Robb Elementary School. Shown with Dr. Wolfelt and Legacy Funeral Groups president and CEO Michael Soper are the frontline REK team. Shown (L to R) are: Assistant Manager June Ybarra, Paul Stephens, Dr. Wolfelt, Michael Soper, REK Manager Taylor Massey, Roxanne Hill and David Gonzales. The funeral home’s entire staff, individually meets with a San Antonio psychologist and Wolfelt protegee every week as part of the ongoing aftercare program the Legacy Group provides. During his visit to Uvalde, Dr. Wolfelt also met with local first responders and their families. Richard spends most of his time on the road traveling between the different locations. His wife, DeeDee, who is a CPA, along with Donna Amundson and Jill Ralph, oversee most of the home office financial work as well as payroll and other necessary support for all the locations. All three are always in contact with the different locations so they can support them with all their needs whether they be human resources, bookkeeping, IT or general matters. Capstone’s purchases have been in West Virginia, Virginia, Florida and Oregon and are identifying other states as opportunities become available. The standard plan when a new location is brought into the Capstone family is to address what is needed from an employee and staffing perspective, start any remodeling that is needed to the facilities, update the rolling stock and really get to know all of the staff while listening to what they feel the community wants in a funeral home. “In Oregon, we purchased a large block of funeral homes and cemeteries from a larger company all at once. At that time, the employee morale was low, the facilities were in dire need of updating and most of the rolling stock was very dated. Within a short timeframe, we have been able to update and remodel multiple locations, purchase and update most of the entire fleet with brand new hearses and vans, purchase brand new back hoes and equipment for all our cemeteries and increase salaries and wages across the board. To date, we have spent around $1.5 million and will most likely spend another $1.5 million before we are done,” said Lee. The Oregon acquisition was unique for Capstone because they formed an operating partnership with some long-time industry professionals (David Deighton, Bill Jaehnig and Zach Edwards) who are in complete control and are free to continue expanding their partnership. Capstone provided all of the funds for the purchase, the needed working capital and capital expenditures as well as committing funds for any future acquisitions. “Our goal is to invest in good organizations with good management and allow them to run them like it was theirs. And if we do our job right, we turn them into great businesses with great management” added Lee. Capstone Services Group is fortunate to be in a financial position where they do not have to borrow from banks or other lending institutions and are completely debt free. This allows them to continue to invest in the businesses they own and more so in the staff and employees who are the key to each location’s success.
