Colorado Burial Preserve, Ltd was founded in 2020 in response to growing demand in the community for a nat- ural burial ground. Founder Emily B. Miller, a licensed funeral director and embalmer, was new to Colorado and working in funeral home management when she assisted a family who was seeking natural burial after a sudden death. Unsatisfied with the progress of green burial op- tions in the state, Miller resolved to become a leader in the movement for this merciful, meaningful death care option in Colorado. “I believe the rise we see in cremation rates is partly due to the failure of conventional cemeteries to appeal to to- day’s families in terms of costs, rules and aesthetics,” says Miller. “How many times have you heard someone ask for ‘simple’ arrangements or not to make a fuss over them when they have died? These cases will almost always be- come direct cremations where green burial is not an op- sensitive areas in perpetu- ity, a chemical-free invasive species management plan, and burial density limits that protect soil quality. The burial gardens, which all consist of both full body and cremation graves, are designed with extra-large spaces. This way, funeral services need not destroy the existing native vegeta- tion or other unique fea- tures of the landscape. Op- tions for memorial markers blend with the natural en- vironment. The first six burial and cremation gardens have already been established for prearrangement and immediate need. Private tours of the Preserve are currently available by ap- pointment, as develop- ment continues on hiking trails, an outdoor service chapel, and a sustainably- built, off-grid restroom fa- cility. When finished, the Preserve will be a public resource for nature enrich- ment, promoting aware- ness of our interconnect- ed ecosystem, as well as a peaceful and beautiful lo- cation to establish the leg- acy of a family cemetery plot. As a community, we are facing increasingly dire news about the long-term effects of human activity, including funeral and cem- etery care, on the health of the planet. Colorado Buri- al Preserve & Cremation Garden stands for the be- lief that conserved open space is an asset to the en- tire community, that natu- ral burial enhances this val- ue and in no way degrades it, and that education in a natural environment is im- portant enrichment for all adults and children alike. In this way, green buri- al is both the ancient way and the exciting future for death care in Colorado. Colorado Burial Preserve Continued from Page A12 tion. In reality, natural burial is the simplest, and least polluting, of all disposition options. Returning to this an- cient human custom can keep some crematory emissions out of the atmosphere, and the family still has an oppor- tunity to benefit from an interment service.” Cemetery development and Green Burial Council cer- tification involved an Environmental Impact Analysis to thoroughly evaluate the baseline ecological conditions at the Preserve. As a certified Natural Burial Grounds, CBP has committed to rules and covenants that help repair and protect the diverse ecosystem on the property. Burial must be of un-embalmed remains in either biodegrad- able caskets or shrouds, or of cremated remains in biode- gradable urns. Vaults are never used. Families are invited to participate in all stages of the burial process, including the option to hand-dig, lower with straps, and fill in the grave as a physical and emotional rite of passage.
