Smith and Sons Funeral Home builds
New Addition
WHITLEY COUNTY,IN—
Smith and Sons Funeral
Home
was founded in 1851
by
Henry S. Smith
and 163
years later
Terry Smith
is
continuing the legacy. Ter-
ry is a 5th generation fu-
neral director and his sons;
Taron, Scott
and
Gene
are
also funeral directors.
Earlier this year Terry and
his sons planned a new addi-
tion to the traditional Victo-
rian style mansion original-
ly built in 1890. The 2,650
square foot addition was
completed in June with the
help of their designer
Alma
Freeman
and her team at
Columbia House Interi-
ors,
Columbia City, IN.
The Smiths have furnished
the new space with sever-
al selections from the
Hek-
man
furniture line. “We
needed pieces that would
preserve the essence of this
traditional funeral home
while also adapting to the
modern feel of the new ad-
dition,” said Freeman.
In addition to the new fur-
Leaded Stain Glass Window
niture Terry has incorporated a number of
antiques and historical artworks that have
been collected over the years. The signature
piece is a leaded stain glass window from the
home’s original construction. “Our builders
made special accommodations for the stain
glass to be built into the addition. It could
not be exposed to the elements but need-
ed to be near a window for the sunlight.”
Terry also remembers his father’s passion for
woodworking by displaying several of his
masterpieces throughout the funeral home.
There has been an effusive response from
the community and the Smith’s are planning
a grand opening this fall.

When he left for Iraq he told me to
think of him and remember the
good times.
When I got notification of his death,
I died inside. My worst fear was
realized and I couldn’t do anything
but stare out the window and cry.
They must have made a mistake,
he couldn’t be gone.
