and were in great demand for weddings and funerals. It
was their observation and belief that they could better di-
rect and conduct funerals that led John J. to hang out his
shingle as an “Undertaker” in 1884.
In those days most undertakers developed from cabinet
makers or furniture dealers. There were no professional
licenses required. Embalming was not commonly prac-
ticed since that technique had only been developed to-
