2013 An-
nual Convention in Wash-
ington, DC was a rous-
ing success. In addition to
marking the celebration
of the association’s 100
th
birthday, the meeting was
notable in many ways.
Before it officially start-
ed, nearly 50 people
were present to witness
the exciting premiere of
CANA’s new
Cremato-
ry Operations Certifica-
tion Program
. Featuring
games and case stud-
ies, the new training was
warmly received.
This convention, with
over 300 participants,
was the most family-
friendly CANA event
ever, with more than 30

kids sharing quality time
with their parents, tag-
ging along for such DC
delights as a tour of the
U.S. Capitol building, a
Washington Nationals
baseball game, and an in-
sider’s look at
Arlington
National Cemetery
with
CANA’s special guide,
Colonel Jack E. Lechner,
Jr
. – who also happens
to be the cemetery’s dep-
uty superintendent. The
family fun was capped
off at the Centennial
Dance Party, where a live
band, The Rumors, kept
up a rockin’ beat as kids
and adults had a blast
through the evening.
The education sessions
were thoughtful, infor-
mative, and inspiring.
On Thursday morning,
keynote speaker
Dennis
Snow
began with a dis-
cussion of customer loy-
alty that led into CANA
Historian
Jason Ryan
Engler’s
masterful recap
of the first 100 years of
CANA.
Lacey Robin-
son
provided insight into
the sometimes delicate
art of answering phone
inquiries. The final pre-
sentation of the day was
a panel on putting tech-
nology to work to grow
your business and better
serve families.
On Friday, the mood
turned somber during
Dr.
Rick Snow’s
examination
of the mistakes made and
lessons learned during the
Tri-State Crematory di-
saster in Georgia several
