A year ago, Chris Palermo, President of the Vermont Funeral Directors Association, contacted CCCC funeral service director Daniel Shea about the collaboration for a program similar to the funeral director license. The embalmer program, which has recently come to fruition, allows for employment, online courses, and mentoring - all happening concurrently. “There have been numerous steps in the process, and I would like to thank OPR, Cape Cod Community College, Daniel Shea, the funeral program director, and Candace Lewis of CCV for coming together in the development of this program, again a first in the nation pathway for home grown licensees,” says Palermo. The CCCC embalming curriculum is comprised of five courses: Embalming 1, Embalming Clinical, Embalming 2, Embalming Chemistry, Sanitary Science, and Restorative Art. Embalming 1 covers the basics of embalming, instrumentation, order/process, chemicals, and safety. Embalming 2 picks up where Embalming 1 left off with special cases such as edema, decomposition, trauma, and other severe cases that require special embalming principles. The Embalming Clinical is completed alongside Embalming 1 as a corequirement and consists of at least ten embalming cases at a clinical site approved and inspected by the clinical instructor. We will set up clinical sites throughout Vermont. Embalming Chemistry covers the chemical components starting with a general overview of chemistry concepts, moving into the chemistry of the chemicals and other supplements used during an embalming and postembalming care. Sanitary Science is two-thirds pathology and one-third microbiology. This course prepares students in understanding the different types of deaths with a deep medical approach and is taught by funeral faculty. Restorative Art covers all the restorative and cosmetic applications pertinent to post-mortem care. The course also includes a guest speaker and demonstration as well as the traditional wax head reconstruction as a final project. CCCC has a pre-prerequisite of Survey of Anatomy and Physiology in order to take the embalming curriculum. This course covers the material of Anatomy 1 and Anatomy 2 in one course with less depth. If a student has already taken AP1 and AP2 or has taken a Survey of A&P course elsewhere (such as CCV’s Human Biology required for the FD program), they will accept it in transfer. The CCCC Survey of A&P course is entirely online. All the courses in the curriculum designated as FSR (Funeral/Embalming courses) are delivered in a “Hyflex” format, meaning that half the students are physically in a seat in the classroom while the other half of the students are in class remotely via Zoom at the same time. This will allow Vermont students to remain entirely remote during the program, not taking away from work or family obligations, while reaping the benefit of a live class where students have immediate and direct interaction with classmates and professors. The program director, Daniel Shea, is the point of contact to begin the application process. His email address is: dshea@capecod.edu. It should be noted that students enrolling in the Vermont Embalming curriculum always have the option to continue courses at CCCC to earn an Associate’s Degree if desired.
