GERALD O. “JERRY” BAHNMILLER
of Jackson, MI
died May 28, 2014 at the age of 92. He and his wife,
Mildred,
owned and operated the
Bahnmiller Fu-
neral Home
in Saline for several years before sell-
ing it to
Jim Robinson
in 1984. The Bahnmillers
purchased the funeral home from
Francis
and
Alice
Lockwood
in 1961. He attended
Wayne State Uni-
versity
where he studied mortuary science. He was a
member of the
Michigan Funeral Directors Association
for more than 60 years as well as past president and
member of the association’s local district.
H. CRAIG MANN
of Philadelphia, PA died May 24, 2014
at the age of 66. He was president of
Mann Funeral
Home Inc
in Olney for many years, which was estab-
lished by his father,
Henry
in 1909. He became supervi-
sor of the family business when his father
died in 1993.
He was a graduate of the
American Academy McAllister
Institute of Funeral Service
in Manhattan.
KEVIN FRANCIS MONAGHAN
of Mechanicsville, VA died
May 14, 2014 at the age of
51. In 2000, he founded
Ha-
nover Memorial Park Cem-
etery.
In 2007, he partnered
with his brother
Jerry
to
found
Monaghan Funeral
Home & Cremation Servic-
es.
He was a graduate of
Mid-
America College of Mortuary
Service
in Jeffersonville, IN.
ROBERT C. PASTORIUS
of
Wexford, PA, formerly of Shal-
er, PA died May 13, 2014 at
the age of 65. He was a long-
time Pittsburgh funeral di-
rector, and was past board
member and secretary of the
Allegheny County Funeral Di-
rectors Association.
ELMER HAROLD VIERKANT
of Osage, IA died May
21, 2014 at the age of 85. He was a longtime funer-
al director, serving families in El Cajon since 1953.
He served his internship under the direction of
Milton
Paris
of
Paris Mortuary.
Elmer then moved to
Lewis
Colonial Mortuary
where he served as a funeral di-
rector for several years. In 1961, he returned to man-
age Paris Mortuary, which eventually became
El Cajon
Mortuary.
In the early 1950s he earned an associate
degree from the
California College of Mortuary Science
in Los Angeles. He served as president for both, the
San Diego County Embalmers Association,
and the
San
Diego County Funeral Directors Association
.
GERTRUDE L. HEYWARD
of
Charleston, SC died May 8,
2014 at the age of 96. She
was a licensed funeral direc-
tor at
G. W. Heyward’s Mor-
tuary,
which was founded by
her father in 1924. She as-
sumed ownership of the firm
in 1978, and at the time of
her passing was the oldest
living African-American li-
censed embalmer in South
Carolina. She was a graduate
of
Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service
in Nashville,
TN. She was a member of the
National Funeral Directors
and Morticians Association,
and was the first woman to
lead the
South Carolina Morticians Association.

NJ died June 4, 2014 at the
age of 78. He was the manag-
er and caretaker of the
New-
ark Jewish Cemeteries
and
Beth David Memorial Park.
He formed
Sanford B. Ep-
stein, Inc.,
headquartered in
Kenilworth, and joined his
mother,
Ida Margolis Ep-
stein
in forming
I Epstein
and Son,
a maintenance and caretaking company for
the
Union Field Cemeteries
in Newark. Along with
his sons, they were the management caretakers for the
Oheb Shalom Cemetery
in Hillside, NJ;
Temple B’nai
Jeshurun Cemetery
in Elizabeth, NJ;
the
Temple Sho-
lom Cemetery
in Bridgewater, NJ; the
Mt. Nebo Cem-
etery
in Totowa, NJ; and the burial caretakers for the
Mount Freedom Hebrew Cemetery
in Randolph, NJ.
He and his daughter acquired an existing monument
company in Newark to create
Raiken Epstein Memo-
rials, Inc
in 1982. He was the cemetery chairman of
dozens of burial societies, including the
Mt. Sinai Odd
Fellows, Congregation AABC, AABI, Beth Torah, Check-
anovitzer, Derech Jeschoroh Chevra Kadischah, Dav-Ann
Schwartz, The First Tarnapoler, The Jersey Warshauer, The
Linitzer,
and The
Weequahic Progressive.
