Ownership of the funer-

to his wife Lois, to their

M. Witzke
. Ownership of
the funeral home eventual-
ly passed on to Craig’s fa-
ther,

.
In 1996, Witzke Funeral
Homes were acquired by
a publicly traded company
based out of Houston, TX,
which still operates the lo-
cations on Edmondson
Ave. and Twin Knolls Rd.,
under the Witzke name.
Craig Witzke, a licensed
funeral director for over 25
years opened Candle Light
Funeral Home, to carry on
the Witzke Family tradition
of offering the highest level
of personalized service. The
staff includes Russell Witz-
ke and
LindaWitzke-Lew-
is
, Craig’s sister, who is also
a licensed funeral director
and handles pre-arrange-
ments. Craig’s daughter
Ashley
is entering the Mor-
tuary Program at the
Com-
munity College of Baltimore
County
. Craig is a mem-
ber of the
Delmarva Funer-
al Directors Association
and

Funeral Automobile As-
sociation.
The Candle Light build-
ing itself has a long history
in the Catonsville commu-
nity.The original house was
built in the mid-1800s. In
the mid-1920s, the Rogers
family began the pleasant
tradition of offering after-
noon tea and light fare in
the parlors and on the gra-
cious porch. Ten or twelve
cottages were built behind
the house to accommodate
people traveling between
Baltimore and Washing-
ton, and it became the
Candle Light Lodge. The
property remained an inn
and changed hands sever-
al times before the Witz-
ke family purchased it this
year and began restoring it
to its original grandeur.
