The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel - Campbell Centre, Dallas TX was the headquarters hotel for April 5 – 8, 2022 Conference. After a two-year hiatus, people were happy to gather together, talk over coffee and catch up on what was new in their schools and associations. Forty-three of the fifty-six accredited institutions and programs had a least one representative attending as well as representatives from our association members, National Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, and Cremation Association of North America. The first two days of the Conference were devoted to the ABFSE Standing Committee meetings. The Committee on Accreditation, chaired by Leili McMurrough of Worsham College, Wheeling, IL, met both Tuesday and Wednesday where they reviewed and rendered decisions for thirteen ABFSE programs ranging from distance education substantive change applications, re-accreditation, and initial accreditation. Other ABFSE Standing Committees met on Wednesday including the Scholarship Committee chaired by Jose Moreno of San Antonio College, San Antonio, TX; the Curriculum Committee chaired by Cody Lopasky of Commonwealth Institute, Houston, TX; the Accreditation Liaison Committee chaired by Venus Riley Smith of Jefferson State Community College, Birmingham, AL; and the Program Committee chaired by David Coughran of St. Louis Community College, St. Louis, MO. Wednesday afternoon participants attended Professional Development workshops presented by Passare and TribuCast. Wednesday at 6:00 pm a “Conversation on Current Issues” moderated by ABFSE president Joleana Grande, of Cypress College, Cypress, CA was attended by an overwhelming majority of the participants and lasted well into the evening. Discussion was lively and informative. Thursday morning the National Board Liaison Committee chaired by Tim Krause of Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg, IL, met with many guests attending. Dalene Paull, executive director of the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Board along with ICFSEB president Jennifer Kandt and ICFSEB candidate services manager Allie Sparkman were present to share information and take questions from the audience regarding the National Board Examination. Thursday morning also provided an opportunity for seventeen exhibitors to share information regarding their products and services with attendees. Thursday afternoon was highlighted by a trip to Dallas Institute of Funeral Service, where participants also discussed “Best Practices for Teaching.” Thursday evening the University Mortuary Science Education Association and the National Associated Colleges of Mortuary Science held their respective dinner meetings. Friday morning the College and University Council, chaired by Cody Lopasky of Commonwealth Institute, Houston, TX met. The CUC serves as the “caucus” for all academic programs/institutions which are members of the ABFSE. Attendance to the CUC meeting is restricted to ABFSE faculty only. Following the CUC meeting the annual meeting of the American Board of Funeral Service was conducted. The annual meeting was livestreamed to members of the ABFSE who were unable to attend in person compliments of TribuCast. The meeting was called to order at 9:33 am by president Jolena Grande, Cypress College, Cypress, CA. James Shoemake, retired president of Dallas Institute delivered the Service of Remembrance.
