News Educational ContinueD Des Moines Mortuary Science Students Package Meals to Feed the Hungry DES MOINES,IA— On March 25th, eighty students with the Des Moines Area Commu- nity College mortuary science program con- verged on the Meals From The Heartland facility in West Des Moines, IA to partici- pate in a community service project. The group consisted of many Iowa students as well as students from all over the country, with some coming from as far as Washington State, Delaware, Texas, and North Dakota. During the 90-minute session, DMACC’s mortuary science students packaged 16,500 meals that will be sent to needy fam- ilies in the United States and abroad. The meal-packing proj- ect was the first event in a week-long stay for the mor- tuary science students, who also took part in visits to places of worship in the Des Moines area, participated in NFDA’s Funeral Arranger Training, and created and present- ed mock funeral ceremonies to the entire stu- dent body. DMACC’s Mortuary Science Program is located in Ankeny, IA and offers a tra- ditional on-campus program as well as a fully online, funeral home-based program that serves students across the country. The Center for Loss and Life Transition is dedi- cated to the education and support of both the bereaved and bereavement caregivers. Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s seminars have evolved out of a de- mand for concise yet comprehensive information in the area of death education and counseling. During these four- day training sessions, Dr. Wolfelt teaches practical ways to “companion” people in grief. These seminars are designed to meet the needs of people from a variety of backgrounds, including hospice staff and volunteers, mental health care providers, social workers, clergy, school personnel, funeral directors, nurses and physicians, students and other inter- ested professionals, as well as lay people.
