A licensed funeral di- rector and embalmer, Cavender began his ca- reer in funeral service in 1987 after receiving his Associate of Applied Sci- ence Degree in Funeral Service from Dallas In- stitute, initially working in the Kansas City area and then as an embalmer for the SCI Dallas metro embalming service. Joining Dallas Institute in 1994 as an instructor, he has taught chemistry, pathology, funeral service ethics, general psychology, embalming lab, written communications, funeral directing, psy- chology of grief, and funeral service microbiology. He also served as the director of the clinical program for over fifteen years. Cavender earned his master’s degree at Amber Uni- versity and is a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP). He has also served on committees with the accrediting agency for schools of mortuary science, the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE). He has participated in multiple curriculum outline reviews for them and also served on several visiting teams that are a part of the reaccreditation process for all mortuary schools. Cavender has previ- ously served on the National Board Liaison commit- tee and currently holds the position of chair of the curriculum committee for the ABFSE. “Dallas Institute of Funeral Service is a top funeral service college and I am confident that Cavender has the necessary creative approach, qualifications and experience to lead the college to an even higher pla- teau of excellence,” said Jill Karn, chief operating of- ficer of Pierce Mortuary Colleges. “He already has a deep understanding of the mission, vision and val- ues of Dallas Institute, which will help accelerate his leadership as the next DIFS president.” “I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff and students to continue to build upon the excellent work that is already taking place on campus,” Caven- der said. B U C H A N A N , G A — Spring time has brought growth to the Academy of Professional Funer- al Service Practice . Over the years the Academy has recognized hundreds of funeral directors who have completed the re- quirements for the CFSP (Certified Funeral Service Practitioner) designation, the highest industry-rec- ognized mark of dedica- tion to life-long learning. This spring the Academy has awarded 9 of its mem- bers the prestigious CFSP designation. The follow- ing Academy members have recently completed this milestone: Thomas Burger, Hilton, NY; Al- len Edmaiston, Union City, TN; Christopher Griffith, Calera, AL; De- marien Hawk, Havana, FL; Brendan McKe- on, Monroe, CT; Tyler O’Brien, Temperance, MI; Paula Porter, Cor- pus Christi, TX; Henry Vinson, Cincinnati, OH; and Herbert Walker III, Cincinnati, OH. These Academy mem- bers join over 1700 cur- rent CFSP designees who have voluntarily commit- ted to going above and beyond the continuing education hours required by most of their licensing boards. The CFSP desig- nation is awarded after a member accumulates 180 hours of approved activi- ties. Once members reach the required hours, they must continue to com- plete a minimum of 20 hours per year to main- tain their designation. This commitment to con- tinuing education and community service not only sets them apart in the funeral profession, but also shows the fami- lies they serve that they have the desire and pas- sion to surpass the hours required to remain li- censed. The Academy has also added 34 new active mem- bers the first quarter of this year.
