A licensed funeral director and embalmer, he was the owner and operator of Berube-Co- meau Funeral Home, which he purchased in 1968. He graduated from the New Eng- land Institute of Mortuary Sci- ence in 1966. GERALD “JERRY” BRYAN SR of Deland, FL formerly of Pittsburgh and Murrysville, PA died December 21, 2018 at the age of 65. . He graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Em- balming, where he later taught embalming. A licensed Florida and Pennsylvania funeral direc- tor and embalmer, he was em- ployed at the Baldauff Funeral Home in Orange City, FL. HARRY C. COWPER of East- lake, OH died December 31, 2018 at the age of 90. A li- censed funeral director and embalmer, he was employed at Monreal Funeral Home for over 50 years. BENNEY LEE HALLER of Chillicothe, OH died Janu- ary 1, 2019 at the age of 74. A licensed funeral director and embalmer, he was co-owner of the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory. A 1966 gradu- ate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association. JAMES THOMAS MURPHY of Stamford, CT died Janu- ary 7, 2019 at the age of 67. He was a long-time funer- al director and embalmer for the Edward Lawrence Fu- neral Home in Darien. He graduated from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 1972. ANDREW J. POLLARD of Countryside, IL died De- cember 15, 2018 at the age of 94. He was a devoted em- ployee of the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Cemeter- ies, having served there for 56 years, most recently as di- rector of finance, until his re- tirement at age 82. THEODORE “TED” RAGS- DALE JR of Muskogee, OK died December 29, 2018 at the age of 82. A licensed fu- neral director, he was the pre- vious owner and operator of Ragsdale Funeral Home. He served on the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors. RICHARD A. “DICK” STOWERS of Brandon, FL died January 9, 2019 at the age of 89. He established Stowers Funeral Home and Ambulance Ser- vice, Tampa Chapel, Riv- erview Chapel, B. Marion Reed, and Marsicano Funer- al Home. He graduated from the Dallas Institute-Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Sci- ence in 1959. DOROTHY SPROWL WILLIS of Dalton, GA died December 12, 2018 at the age of 92. A licensed funeral director, she co-founded Willis Funer- al Home alongside her hus- band, the late Williams J. Willis, Sr in 1949. JAMES R. ZETTLER of Ham- ilton, OH died January 7, 2019 at the age of 95. A li- censed funeral director and embalmer for 72 years, he served as chairman and pres- ident of Zettler Funeral Home, which he founded alongside his wife, Marian in 1951. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Em- balming in 1941. RUSSELL H. “RUSS” SPRING of McConnelsville and Zanes- ville, OH died January 9, 2019 at the age of 62. A re- tried funeral director and em- balmer, he worked at the De- Long-Baker and Lanning Funeral Home in Zanesville and later the Vorhis Funeral Home in Cincinnati. A 1986 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association. HELEN HOYMAN SNYDER of Ligonier, PA died Decem- ber 22, 2018 at the age of 77. A licensed funeral direc- tor, she worked alongside her husband, the late Gordon O. Snyder in owning and oper- ating Snyder Funeral Home Inc in Ligonier and the for- mer L. Boyd Snyder Funer- al Home Inc in Donegal for over 50 years. She continued to operate the funeral homes after her husband died in 2009 as well as the Laurel Highlands Crematory and Pet Cremation Service in Westmoreland. A 1960 graduate of the Pittsburgh In- stitute of Mortuary Science, she became the first wom- an elected president of the Westmoreland, Indiana and Armstrong County Funeral Directors Association. JOSEPH A. MISENCIK of Avon, OH and formerly of Lakewood, OH died Decem- ber 19, 2018 at the age of 82. A licensed funeral direc- tor and embalmer, he worked alongside his father, the late Joseph B. Misencik until his death in 1967 and continued to own and operate the Joseph Misencik Funeral Home in Lakewood. In 1982, he and his wife, Marilyn purchased the Garland Funeral Home in Amherst, now the Gar- land-Misencik Funeral Home and in 1996 they built the Misencik Funeral Home in Avon. He was past president of the Cuyahoga Funeral Directors Association. HERBERT C. BARKER of Chi- cago, IL died January 2, 2019 at the age of 96. A licensed fu- neral director and embalmer, he was the owner of Barker’s Mortuary and Cremation. A 1948 graduate of the Wor- sham College of Mortuary Sci- ence, he was a member of the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association, Illinois Select Funeral Directors Asso- ciation, Epsilon Nu Delta Mortuary Fraternity, and the 100 Black Men of Funeral Service, Inc., where he was honored as a 2012 Living Legend of Funeral Service. JOHN P. “SONNY” COX of Charleston, WV died Jan- uary 12, 2019 at the age of 88. A licensed funeral direc- tor for sixty-nine years, he was the owner and operator of Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home. In 1955, he received the Charles E. Dodd Award for Outstanding Fu- neral Director of the Year. Cox was a member of the Na- tional Selected Morticians Association, National Funer- al Directors Association, and the West Virginia Funeral Directors Association, where he also served as presi- dent of the associations Golf Tournaments. FRED D. GARRETT SR of Greenville, SC died Novem- ber 8, 2018 at the age of 94. In 1958, he was hired as a part-time employee of the Watkins, Arnold and Shep- pard Mortuary. Later, he be- came part-owner/manager and the name was changed to Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary. In 1993, Fred Garrett, Sr., became the sole owner. He was a life member of the National Funer- al Directors Association, former president of the South Carolina Morticians Association, and was a 2012 Liv- ing Legend of Funeral Service honoree of the 100 Black Women of Funeral Service. DONALD S. “DONZIE” RUSSELL of Springdale, OH died Jan- uary 8, 2019 at the age of 83. In 1978 he became the president of Vorhis Funeral Homes, Inc upon the death of his father. He retired in 2004 after 49 years of service. REVEREND MONSIGNOR JOHN W. “JACK” DALTON of Naper- ville, IL died January 7, 2019 at the age of 95. He was a longtime Catholic priest in the Archdio- cese of Dubuque, IA. Following three years of as- sociation with the Catho- lic Cemeteries of Chicago, he began his studies for the priesthood at Loras College in Dubuque. He was ordained as a priest on February 1, 1958 and named an Honorary Prelate on July 30, 1987. In 1989, he was appointed national director of Catholic Cemeteries, an appointment he served until his retire- ment in 1993. In 1991 and 1992, he served as presi- dent of the National Catholic Cemetery Conference.
