From 1959 through 1964 Harry oper- ated Bowers Church Furni- ture which he sold in order to concentrate his efforts on the mortuary supply business. Located in a storefront that was formerly a hearse garage in Berkeley, CA, Harry built up the business and had five salesmen. “He put his life into this business. He was never home. He’d come in, have dinner, and go back to the store,” recalls Craig. Craig attended the Cali- fornia College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland from 1969 through 1971. Bowers, founder of Bowers Mortuary Sup- ply, had an extensive back- ground in the funeral in- dustry. He wanted to be a doctor, but didn’t have the financial means to attend medical school. Instead, he went to embalming school and became an embalm- er and funeral director. He began his career in the late 1920s at Truman’s Funeral Home working under Har- ry Truman. During WWII, Harry served as an officer then captain in the United States Army, where he command- ed an ambulance compa- ny. After the war, he came back to Oakland, CA and Truman’s Funeral Home, where he returned to his job as manager. Harry mar- ried and in 1948, had his first son, Craig. By the time his second son was born in 1951, Harry was “itchy about starting his own busi- ness,” says Craig, who is now almost 74 years old. In 1953, Harry took action on that dream. With only $2000, he went into business with his partner, Fred Wal- ters. On January 1, 1954, he bought out Mr. Walters and became sole owner of the company. Bowers Mortuary Supply was born. Using formulas fromMein- hart Laboratories in Oak- land, Harry created his own brand of chemicals, com- time at the company while in college. Once he gradu- ated and got married, he went full-time. “It paid the bills with my growing fam- ily, and I could still concen- trate on my art in my spare time,” he says. Charles R.
