LEESMAN Funeral Home Muster Coaches 1-800-274-3619 Calhoun, KY As we start a new year, we turn our attention on how to make 2022 the best and most productive year for our businesses. So, the question is what are you going to do different this year in order to help your funeral home go to the next level of success? Notice the ques- tion. What are you going to DO? Do is the key. His name was Bjarni Herjulfson and he should be known to all of us, but he isn’t. He should be one of the most famous explorers in all of history, but he is not. He is not considered a great success because he wasn’t willing to get out of the boat. Let me tell you his story. The year was 986 AD and Bjarni and his crew were sailing to Greenland. How he looked forward to reaching its familiar majestic moun- tains and impressive glaciers. However, a massive storm was seen on the horizon. The tiny ship was buffeted for days like a single snowflake in a blizzard wind. Finally, the fierce winds calmed and the skies cleared. Land could be seen. But what land was the question? It didn’t look like Greenland. Where were the moun- tains and the glaciers? At that moment what Bjarni didn’t know is that the storm had blown his tiny ship all the way across the Atlantic. The land he was look- ing at was a place we know as Canada. After horrible days and nights at sea, his crew des- perately wanted to step foot on dry land. They begged Bjarni to anchor the ship, but he refused. He wanted to go home. So, without allowing anyone to step foot off the ship, he turned around and sailed back out to sea. A week later, they arrived in Greenland. Bjarni Herjulfson and his crew were probably the first Europeans to see the Americas, but they get no credit. You see, the champions in every arena are the ones who are willing to get out of the boat. The cham- Bright Ideas for Funeral Directors with Mark Bowser pions are the ones willing to step foot on the field. History forgets those who only stay in the stands. In order to win, we have to be willing to get up off our seats and step on the field. A name you are probably familiar with is that of Leif Eriksson. He is the famous explorer who is given the credit as the first European to step foot in the Ameri- cas. But, without Bjarni Herjulfson it would have nev- er happened. Years after that fateful trip of Bjarni’s, he shared the story with Leif. Leif listened intently and decided to retrace Bjarni’s voyage and the day came when Leif stepped off his ship onto dry land and into fame and success. And, the rest they say is history. So, again I ask all of us; what are we going to DO this year? Discover new ways to serve the families in your community and you can make 2022 the best year so far. Thanks for reading today.
