James W. Tunie, Sr.
more time with her hus-
band. With the death of
his father in 1969, Ted and
Jo Anne worked as a team.
Ted became very active in
the community, church,
and funeral related organi-
zations, and held many im-
portant offices locally, state-
wide and nationally, from
president to district gov-
ernor. He is currently in
his 15th year as a member
and trustee of the Ameri-
can Academy McAllister
Institute of Funeral Ser-
vice in New York. He has
received numerous awards,
citations and distinguished
service accommodations
from around the nation. At
74 years of age, he has seen
his daughter
Jennifer
be-
come licensed, work in the
business and serve in sever-
al distinguished positions of
honor in the funeral profes-
sion. His message is, “peace,
love and magic” to all of his
funeral colleagues.
Living Legends of AAMI and PIMS
James W. Tunie – Home-
stead, Pennsylvania
James W. Tunie
was
raised, along with his
six siblings, in Home-
stead, PA. His parents
were close friends of the
late
George W. Gaines
, a
prominent Pittsburgher
and proprietor of the
Gaines Funeral Home
located in the East Liber-
ty section of the city. In
the summer of 1941, a
14-year-old James Tunie
went to work for Mr.
Gaines. That was the be-
ginning of a relationship
that would last a lifetime
and foster a career in fu-
neral service. He lived
at the funeral home and
that invaluable four years
of on-call work experi-
ence exposed him from
ground up, to every as-
pect of the funeral busi-
ness. After graduating
from high school in 1945,
he served in the United
States Army. Upon dis-
charge, he returned to his
parents’ home and using
his GI Bill benefits, he
enrolled at the
Pittsburgh
Institute of Mortuary Sci-
ence
(PIMS) graduating
in 1948.
In 1953, he accepted a
position with the
Frances
A. Keith Funeral Home
in McKeesport, PA.
While serving his appren-
ticeship there, he married
his longtime sweetheart,
Evelyn Hawkins Tunie.
This union produced five
children and the adoption
of a daughter. In 1956,
James became a licensed
funeral director and in
1960, he established the
James W. Tunie Funer-
al Home
in Homestead.
With his encouragement
and support, his wife,
Evelyn, graduated from
PIMS in 1968, and re-
ceived her Pennsylva-
nia Funeral Directors Li-
cense. The James Tunie
Funeral Home is cele-
brating 52 years of con-
tinuous dignified and
compassionate service to
Homestead citizens. His
youngest daughter
Stac-
ey Tunie
is also a PIMS
graduate, Class of 2011.
Mr. Tunie’s daughter
Ta-
mara Tunie
is an out-
standing television ac-
tress, currently playing a
Medical Examiner.
